In Game Name: blockbox7b
Reason For Ban: Not Sure (have searched quite hard but can't find any message explaining this)
Reason why you think the is incorrect: it probably is correct, but we just don't know what we've done(!)
Explanation: We just don't know.
Reason for coming back: We really enjoy Pokemon Minecraft on this server and want to know how to follow the rules better otherwise we'll end up getting jailed/banned yet again.
Additional Information: I am writing this message for my son (who is only 7, but a big Pokemon MC fan); he's been jailed twice now and we're not sure what he's doing wrong - I have read through the rules and we've explored the FAQs. All he's really been trying to do is build an Pokemon anvil.
Is the Reason For Jailing reported anywhere? Do the admins message the guilty party in some way? Have searched much of the FAQs and the Forums to work this out without success.
Maybe this server is just too tricky for newbie 7 year old and we should leave?
Many apologies for all inconvenience caused, he's just trying to play and have fun! Any feedback welcome :-) Thanks in advance.
Ban issuer: Not even sure how we find this out, either

Jailed for 10 days for griefing, you must've done something really bad cause Ulla doesn't usually give out big sentences like that, ask her about it.

your son is jailed for griefing, if you do not understand griefing then heres a definition
A griefer is someone that intentionally destroys another users build and obtains the blocks that was broken from the grief, to sell or use to build their own "house"
Some servers allow this but I do not
if your son wishes to portray the life a griefer i would suggest moving on to other servers that allow it
if not , feel welcome to stay

Thanks, the basic concept of griefing is clear; I guess what he is still struggling with is, what blocks *are* valid for mining then? Is there a way of finding out what areas you can or can't mine? We did look in the FAQ for hints, and I've been all over this forum too, and am still confused.
My son's morals are pretty sound, thanks. But yes, we might move to a server with a clearer Getting Started guide/help for younger users if it'll help him not make these sorts of mistakes and getting upset.

You can ask from an admin to tp you like 7 mil away from spawn, then you can sethome. I'm pretty sure that no1 was there so you can do whatever you want in the specific territory.

Oh, well, sorry about the sentence of 10 days, but as I saw it was *about* 1000 items/blocks stolen from someone's house... I really couldn't give him a shorter time... Either way the blocks that are valid for mining are the ones that aren't part of a user built structure. For example, finding a cave and mining minerals is allowed, as the blocks being removed are the ones randomly generated by minecraft. In the contary, mining blocks or stealing from chests that the player doesn't own (for it is owned by some other player) or is not allowed to modify, is considered griefing. Basically everything that isn't part of the randomly generated structures and biomes is off-limits for regular players, except their own properties, of course.
Sorry in advance for any grammatical errors, but as some may already know I'm not originally English-speaking, and I just try my best

The blocks that are valid for him to mine are any blocks that weren't placed by another player. For example, houses that another player built should not be deleted, however a tree or stone can be deleted because it was not placed by someone. As someone else pointed out, we could teleport him far away so that he's not near anyone else's builds and he could set a home there so that it would be safe for him to delete blocks without worry if you'd like. Hopefully this helps I'm on the server a lot and roaming the forums quite a bit so if you have any questions feel free to ask

Many thanks, Ulla & sklyermay; very helpful and informative responses, and very kind offer of help in the future.
The sentence is fine, whether in ignorance or by accident we broke the rules; now we know which rule, and how to probably avoid breaking it again we should be ok.
Still slightly worried that one could accidentally grief (e.g. how close/far away from someone's house/territory counts as theirs, does some flat grass near their house count as their lawn or is it mineable etc). And before you know it you're in jail with no explanation except a wall-full of 12 rules to look at for another 10 days or worse, banned because a patch of grass was actually owned by someone. Probably just noob inexperience on our part, I'm sure it must be more sensible than that.
I'll dig into the /help to see if there are commands to check territory/claim territory etc when I get time/when we're 'released'
In the meantime, thanks again for the advice and support, much appreciated! Hopefully this thread may be useful to others trying to get started too as I don't think we're the first to make this mistake.

This may have been the most courteous jail appeal thread i've ever seen.
For that reason,I would be happy to help answer any question as well, may I meet you in-game.

Hopefully this thread may be useful to others trying to get started too as I don't think we're the first to make this mistake. That is a good point, there isn't exactly a set rule for how close to a house you should be able to delete... I'd probably try to delete pretty far from the house just to be on the safe side; nothing too drastic, probably just at least 15-20 blocks away would be fine. In my experiences most people don't mind much if it's just some grass broken nearby their house as it's pretty easy to replace, though again just to be safe I'd delete a bit away from houses X3
There are some commands to claim territories, though not everyone claims their territory. The way to do this is /f create [desired faction name here] and then /f claim while standing where you want to claim. Each time you do /f claim it should claim about a 5x5 to 10x10 radius around you where only people in your faction as members or above can place or delete blocks in. It also protects chests from people who may steal from them.
As for ways to check if a territory is claimed, just walking into a territory should result as a pop-up in the chat showing the faction name and the faction description in a "FactionName~ FactionDescriptionHere" sort of format. Once you're out of the territory, there should be another popup in chat showing "Wilderness" in green colored text.
Hopefully this helps again and like always if you have anymore questions feel free to ask here or in game And no problem for the previous response, it's my pleasure X3
